GLOSSARY
Blends
Two or more fibers combined in one fabric to bring out the best qualities of each. Example: In a cotton/polyester blend, cotton supplies softness and breath ability; polyester supplies strength and easy-care advantages. Usually referred to by two numbers such as 60/40, with each number representing the percentage of each fiber present in the yarn.

Button-Through Placket
A quality feature where a true eyelet and button closure are added to a sleeve placket.

Broadcloth
A tight, plain woven lustrous shirt fabric, with very fine crosswise rib. Often found in cotton/polyester blends, this fabric was named for the wide (broad) loom on which it was made. Made with high-quality yarns, it is extremely durable.

Colorfast
A term used to describe a fabrics with sufficient color retention so that no noticeable change in shade takes place during the normal life of the garment.

Cotton
Soft vegetable fiber obtained from the seed pod of the cotton plant and one of the major fashion fibers in the textile industry. Different types of cotton have different fiber lengths, the longer the fiber the better the quality. Lengths vary from less than one-half inch to more than two inches.

Chief Value Cotton (CVC)
A term used to designate that a certain fabric has the majority of its value derived from cotton.

Oxford Weave
Fabric in which the size of the yarn that runs in the width direction is about twice the size of the two yarns used in the length direction, creating a distinctive textured effect.

Permanent Press
A process that treats fabric to prevent the formation of wrinkles during wearing and machine washing of garment. Generally requires no ironing.

Pima Cotton
A strong, smooth long-staple cotton grown in the Southwest, noted for its lustrous appearance and soft hand.

Pinpoint Oxford
A traditional basket weave design using very fine plied yarn of combed cotton that results in a soft and lustrous fabric.

Polyester
The general name of synthetic fibers with properties including: high strength, crease-resistance, quick drying, shape retention, abrasion resistance and minimal care.

Sanforized
A Registered Trademark of Cluett, Peabody & Co., Inc. for fabrics processed by machine so that residual shrinkage will not exceed 1% in either direction. The firm licenses its process and mark in the U.S. and abroad under a quality control program.

Single Needle Tailoring
A tailoring process in which armhole seams are double stitched, but only a single row of stitching shows on the right side of the garment; seams lie flat.

Top-Fusing
A heat process, by which the shirt fabric is joined to a flexible lining, to add body or enhance appearance, especially useful for maintaining a crisp look for collars and cuffs.
